From the NCD Media Fellowship "Protecting Kids from Harmful Food Marketing" - Philippines

BY DINNA LOUISE C. DAYAO, VeraFiles. Child overnutrition has become an epidemic in the Philippines, with cases of overweight and obesity rising among the Filipino youth. This is amid the widespread marketing of unhealthy food and beverages towards children, contributing to a food environment that encourages the consumption of highly-processed, salty, sweet, high-calorie, and low-nutrient products that can put children at risk of gaining weight and developing NCDs like type 2 diabetes. This feature article for the NCD Media Fellowship tackles this issue of child-directed marketing of unhealthy food in light of a recently passed ordinance in Taytay, Rizal that regulates such marketing within the municipality. Through interviews with a teenaged case study and a variety of resource persons on child health and nutrition, the story shows the ways marketing create cravings for unhealthy products like fast food, the effects of an unbalanced, nutrient-poor diet on a child’s health, and the potential impact of government legislation regulating the marketing.
